What IS the law of historical development? I have seen a few communist works referring to that law. Please explain. In general law of historical development refers to the Marxist view point of historical materialism in history. Again historical materialism seeks the relationship between the man/woman's basic need and the social classes and the culture, politics. The dialectics of the motion in the society explored historically can be termed as law of historical development.

Okay so...to put it in my own words. Historical development is the development of values of the society, which in turn are caused by economic conditions? Not to be rude but your explanation is rather hard to remember and understand, so I have to put it in my own words so I can remember and understand better.

Historical materialism is the historical development of classes and societies guided by economic and material conditions. According to historical materialism our society has undergone several phases, from slavery to feudalism to capitalism. The next phase is socialism. These phase transitions occur because of contradictions between classes. These contradictions lead to class struggles. Tension between the classes intensifies and at some point a qualitative change occurs: a revolution. This is called dialectical materialism.
